bright eyes tour

Bright Eyes has announced tour dates in support of Cassadaga, and if you want to see the show in the venue closest to the album's namesake, then you'll spend the evening of May 17 at Hard Rock Live in Orlando. I'm thrilled that Conor and Mike and the always-bored-looking keyboard player and all the rest. Check out Pitchforkmedia.com for the full tour.

There's also a stop at the Tampa Theatre on May 16. That venue is absolutely gorgeous. I caught the band there for the I'm Wide Awake It's Morning tour with Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter and Neva Dinova. The theatre opened in 1926, and the city of Tampa took it over in the '70s and restored the venue. It's definitely worth the trip just to see the theatre. And then there's the music. :)

conor's back ... i think

Bright Eyes has a new CD coming out soon, and the new song "Four Winds" is the beautiful, poetic, alt-country anthem you hoped it would be. The video, which you can watch on ifilm.com, is unlike anything they've done before. It's a black-and-white performance video, and the whole band's in it, including Maria Taylor on drums.

But you may not notice any of that, because if you are like me, you're going to be dumbfounded by Conor's appearance and pre-occupied with trying to figure out who he's reminding you of. His long straggly hair is longer than ever, and when he first appeared on my little screen, I thought it was the lead singer of the Arcade Fire. He looks like a completely different person.

The fact that I am even mentioning his hair -- much less focusing on it -- is not something I am proud of. But at least you're not spending these few moments hearing about Anna Nicole Smith.

The new album Cassadaga, by the way, will be out on April 10. The lyrics in one song refers to communing with the dead in Cassadaga. Could it be? My favorite little psychic community??? There's a cool town just north of Orlando that's known for shaking its cosmic thing. I wonder if they traveled through after a show and stopped for a palm reading??? And what's with all these question marks???

I just purchased the Four Winds EP, which includes the first single from Cassadaga and five songs billed as "exclusive B-sides." There are all kinds of amazing guests on the album, including Janet Weiss from Sleater-Kinney, Rachael Yamagata, Ben Kweller, M Ward and a few Saddle Creek folks, as you'd expect. I can't wait to hear the full album.

Oh, look, I found more photos of Conor on Pitchfork, and here's what they said ... "Conor's sporting some terrible hair these days, long and greasy like a bass player in a grunge band circa 1992."

Yikes, tell us how you really feel.

Remember when Michael Hutchence cut his hair so that people would "focus" on his music and not his sexy looks? I think that might be the same rationale Matt Lauer used when he went nearly bald. Doesn't Conor know that his lyrics are just as much of a turn-on as his sad eyes? Whatever. As the new music proves, he's still amazing, and as the pictures below show, he's still hot, and I still want to run my fingers through his hair and French braid it.

i am not a nugget

I just spent more than half an hour on peta’s very cool Web site. There are lots of fun downloads with vintage-looking artwork and fun slogans, like “Cut class, not frogs,” “I am not a nugget,” (I LOVE that one!) and “Love me, don’t wear me.” You can print them as stickers, magnets and iron-on transfers. I included some of my favorites below. There’s also some kickin’ musicians, like Le Tigre, Peaches and Mates of State making their own cruelty-free statements.

Let’s be honest here, I am not a vegetarian. I wish I could be because, as an animal lover, it just makes sense. I eat very little red meat, but way too much chicken and seafood. I started eating a lot more vegetarian dishes a few years ago when I started getting healthy. I loved it. I felt better physically and mentally.

My mom is Catholic, and she never eats meat on Fridays during Lent. That’s why all the seafood restaurants in New Orleans are especially crowded on Fridays at this time of year. That’s about as close as my family got to vegetarianism when I was growing up.

Be sure to check out peta2.com You can even sign up to get a package of stickers, vegetarian recipes and a DVD with footage of Death Cab for Cutie, Le Tigre and some other bands that support the cause.

this american life

Hello DVR, and thank you for the increasingly and ridiculously important role you play in my life. I am so excited about the announcement that the “This American Life” show I listen to on NPR is becoming a Showtime series. Below is the description from sho.com.

And who knew Ira Glass was so adorable???

"Compelling stories are explored every day on "This American Life," the nearly 15-year-old, award-winning Chicago Public Radio show that boasts a devoted weekly listening audience of 1.7 million, and is heard on more than 500 stations nationally. The series, created in 1995 by host and executive producer Ira Glass, pioneered a unique way of telling stories on the radio. Its first-person telling of these revealing stories makes the radio series a great fit for television.

"In the same spirit of the radio show, the televised version of THIS AMERICAN LIFE, premiering Thursday, March 22nd at 10:30 p.m. PT/ET, takes 30-minute looks at stories culled from all over the country. Glass and a small team of radio producers and filmmakers spent six months on the road: traveling to Iowa pig farms, following a first-time filmmaker in California, photographing a raucous night at an Illinois hot dog stand. The result is true stories that are dramatic, emotional, and often funny."

the flaming lips are headed to o-town

After picking up a couple of Grammy Awards last night, Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips announced a brief tour this spring, and they are coming to House of Blues on April 12. Now, you know, that one is going to sell out quickly! I've never seen them live, so the idea that I can see them in such an intimate setting is a great way to end a Monday.

The Arcade Fire are headed out on tour this spring, too, but they are only going as far south as Atlanta.

oh baby!

It was an amazing coincidence. My best friend learned she was pregnant, and just a few days later, my brother and his wife called me to tell me they were expecting, too. The next nine months were full of onesies, sonograms, baby showers and butt paste.

Then January came around. I was consumed in SAINTS "Who dat?" mania and the excitement of two little ladies who were about to enter the world. Still, I wasn’t ready for it. I had no idea how it would hit me.

I am so in love with these two – Ashley and Lily – and I feel like I have something to look forward to for the rest of my life.

First, there was Lily. I took a picture of her in the first hour of her life. I had never seen a baby so new to the world, and I was a bit overwhelmed by my own feelings. I went to the hospital at about 3 p.m. The petocin was flowing, but the flowers weren’t blooming –if you know what I mean. Christy was, as usual, headstrong and brave, and beautiful, too.

At 9:35 p.m., Lily was born by Cesarean section.

I tried to capture as many moments as I could. See some of them online with my new iWeb account.

But the fun wasn’t over yet. Two days later, Mandie and Stephen checked in to a Houston hospital and gave birth to Ashley, my red-headed niece and godchild. I am living off the photos Stephen, my parents and Mandie’s parents send to me. Here are some of my favorites.

To tell you the truth, I cry when I look at these photos. I want to meet Ashley, hug her and hold her because, although I have never met her, I love her more than I can express. I can’t wait to go to Houston with my camera and take an annoying amount of photos!

i soooooo needed this today ...

Today was a super crappy day until I saw this. Unbelievable! As my eyes scroll through the list, my voice gets higher and higher with excitement.

we looked totally nuts

I finally sent in my "What the SAINTS' season means to me" submission to the Times-Picayune newspaper in the New Orleans. Hopefully, it will be posted on NOLA.com soon.

One of my favorite memories of my childhood is going to the airport after Morten Andersen kicked a winning field goal in the last seconds of a game against the Falcons. It was probably 1983 or ’84. My whole family went, and I can remember my cousin Jennifer and I making signs with two paper plates, some tape and a couple of badminton racquets.

We watched ourselves on the local news the next day, and I remember thinking we looked totally nuts. People were chanting “Superbowl SAINTS,” and yet we still had a losing record. But that’s what made it fun and what makes the SAINTS so special to this city.

No matter how badly the 49ers could kick our butts, there was always excitement, hope and sincere love and admiration for the team. I truly loved watching people like Archie, Morten, George Rogers, Hokie Gajan, Dalton Hilliard, Ruben Mayes, Dave Waymer, Brian Hansen, John Fourcade and, of course, that amazing defensive line of the late ’80s and early '90s.

I like to think that the high we experienced that evening at the airport is what made my parents decide to start buying season tickets for the family. We had them for about 10 years, and I couldn’t think of a better way to bond with my family. It was like our Sunday religious experience. We yelled, danced, did the wave, prayed and cried – all as a family in Section 621. We listened to Jim Henderson and Buddy Diliberto on the ride back to Metairie, honking and waving our fists out the windows when we won, and listening in miserable silence to the interviews and replays when we lost.

It’s definitely more than just a game. It’s:

• Grabbing a pre-game lunch at the food court at the New Orleans Centre
• Muting the game on TV and turning up Jim & Archie on the radio
• Waiting for the jazz band to make it over to our section in the third quarter
• Reciting the omnipresent Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse ads on the jumbo screen
• Listening to my mom giggling like someone my own age about her time spent sitting next to Morten at Champion’s restaurant
• Watching fan after fan trip on the staircase on their way to the very top of the Superdome
• Seth Green performing enthusiastic “Cha Chings” on the field back in the heyday of those Rally’s commercials
• Watching strangers high-five and hug each other in the excitement of a great play
• Seeing my dad’s proud face when I spouted off football stats and my teen-age expert opinion

It’s New Orleans, and it’s everything I love about calling it my hometown.

we did it!!!!!

SAINTS 27 - - - Eagles 24

DEUUUUUUUCCCCCE!!!

After 40 years of being the underdogs, the SAINTS are headed to the NFC championship game, and I don't think it has hit me yet.

The games this year have such a different feel, (I guess it's called consistency!) and yet, when the camera tonight panned through the Superdome audience in the final minutes of the game, everyone looked like I did. Hands in prayer position, butterflies in tummy, shirt collar in mouth, we couldn't celebrate like fans of other teams. If there's even a second left on the clock, we know our fortune can still change. It's not until you see the double zero that you can exhale, let your shoulders fall from your ears and relax your butt muscles.

Good God, how am I even going to make it until next weekend!!?? For now, I'm going to enjoy the win, remember how much fun I had growing up in Section 621, Row 8, and feeling thankful that these wins couldn't have come at a better time. BLESS YOU BOYS!

How is Drew Brees the best QB in the NFL? The dude has four arms!

In the Steven Tyler "Wait a minute ... I love that idea" category ... check out this headline: Red Hot Chili Peppers to rock Disneyland Resort. Apparently, the band is following in Aerosmith's footsteps by lending their music to a Disney attraction. Space Mountain will become Rockin' Space Mountain, and riders will hear "Higher Ground" as they twist and turn in the dark roller coaster attraction. "Around the World" will play on Rockin' California Screamin'. The article makes it sounds like this is only temporary; it will end once the Year of a Million Dreams Celebration ends.

Lastly, let me share some fun things I've downloaded recently.

Autloux, as rbally agrees, is quite underrated and not nearly as popular as their talent suggests they should be. Check the blog for live songs from their May 5, 2005, performance at the Double Door in Chicago. My heart was skipping beats as the little blue line followed my Mac's progress of plucking the songs from the Web. They didn't disappoint.

Then, Daytrotter.com highlighted some live Mates of State tracks. Although not as good as hearing them on the polo fields in the beautiful desert heat, they are still lovely. Now do as Daytrotter says: "Download free Mates of State tunes at daytrotter.com"

happy holidaze

I’m tired. The stress of the holidays alone is enough the wear me out – and I don’t mean the stress of being single. I mean JUST the stress of the holidays is enough to make me want to curl up in a fetal position under all my covers. Then you add to the mix impatient drivers, tourists who drive like they got their license this morning, crowded stores, etc., and just forget it. Hibernation until 2007 sounds like a plan.

But there’s just no time for that. There’s really no time to even read this – I mean, are you finished your holiday shopping? If you’re not, then here are some fun Web sites that offer excellent ideas.

Gifts.com - I found some really cool items on the site, and I had a blast just looking through the pages. I wonder if they have birthday registrations???

SockArmy.com – I love funky socks and hosiery. This site has something to complement every outfit in your Ambassador-approved wardrobe.

PerpetualKid.com – With the tag line “Entertain your inner child,” I don’t think there’s much left to say. I will say that I spent nearly an hour perusing all the different categories of gifts. Gingerbread cookie cutters that are missing limbs, marshmallow guns and more. Yes, 33 is the new black.

And if you’ve been so busy that you have no idea what’s going on in the world, let me bring you up to speed.

The New Orleans Saints kick ass. We’re second in the entire NFC!!! WHO DAT!!

Tootie is pregnant.

Nicole Richie got busted, and I learned that she weighs as much as my high school backpack.

Prince’s bare ass is the halftime show of the Superbowl.

Eddie Murphy is Scary Spice’s babydaddy.

And I'm spent.

i'm filled with thankful

This Thanksgiving Weekend, I'm reflecting on all of the things I'm thankful for. There are many, many things I'm thankful for. I could go on and on talking about my amazing family and friends, a job I love that allows me to play as hard as I work, and so much more.

I'm especially thankful for the future. There's so much to look forward to in my life. Ashley and Lily will be here soon, my friend Michael Kelley will have an amazing year as a Disney Ambassador, and so much more. But let's just bring it down a notch and get real. Today, I'm thankful that technology allows me to hear Jeff Buckley say the word "penis."

And I'm very thankful for the next video I found on youtube.com. I've never seen it, and yet the clips are familiar because of Merri Cyr's photography and her book A Wished-For Song, which should be in all Jeff Buckley fans' libraries. Thanks, youtube, for these moments.

martika & fergie

Step by step, heart to heart, left right left, we all fall down like london bridge.

11.20.2006

back to my europe series ...

After the Netherlands, Kim and I were looking forward to having two full days in London completely free. We got in late Friday night, and I had so much bottled-up excitement about being in London that I seriously thought I was going to burst. We checked in to Le Meridien on Picadilly, a posh hotel right in the middle of everything.

The coolest thing in my hotel room was a speaker in the bathroom that played whatever you had on the television. Simple pleasures! Flipping through the channels was like being at a UN meeting – channels in German, French, Dutch, Spanish, even a channel for Al-Jazeera. I loved watching the BBC in the mornings – the biggest news stories were Mark Foley and Bush’s passing of a law that pretty much outlawed online gambling for Americans. (Back in the states, no one had even heard about the online gambling rule – interesting…)

On our first morning, Kim and I walked down Regal Street to Oxford and hit two fun stores – Top Shop and H&M. I hit the hosiery department. I know it sounds lame, but I love funky socks, and with the sucky exchange rate of the British pound, it was about all I could afford. I wound up with a few pairs of socks, tights, a couple of skirts and pair of striped gloves.

a sign on Oxford Street

That afternoon, we had awesome seats for Wicked, and we were lucky enough to catch Idina Menzel reprising her Tony Award-winning role of Elphaba. I never thought I’d see her perform live. She was amazing – producing a series of chills up and down my arm throughout the show – and even a few tears during “Defying Gravity.” What can I say? I am a sucker for an underdog story.

Oh, and the guy who played Piper Perabo’s boyfriend in Coyote Ugly played Fiero. He was pretty impressive, and not just because he was hot and had a British accent.

ummm ... technobarf?

By the end of the show, we were overwhelmed by the drama of West End excitement and decided to walk over to the theater where Billy Elliott was playing to see if they had any tickets available. We heard nothing but rave reviews about the show from anyone we talked to, including Jason, who saw it just a week or two before we arrived in London.

Kim and I were lucky enough to get tickets for Monday night, so we were thrilled and suddenly slightly concerned that we’d get out of work in time to actually make it to the theater. We did, and we really enjoyed the show. The accents were sometimes difficult to understand – think Trainspotting and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels -- but it was a really fun show. The dancing was amazing, especially the 11-year-old boys who had more talent in their big toe than I do in my whole being.

intellectual political statements abound in london

What else? We shopped, we walked all over our “neighborhood” one night – there was a Virgin Megastore on our block! – and on our last free day, we did some sightseeing, too. Kim and I had both visited London before, so we were content to wander around a bit. We went to Tower Bridge and then did something amazing – we hopped on the London Eye for a bird’s-eye view of the city. It was a really cool experience. You move so slowly, it’s almost imperceptible, and it took nearly 20 minutes to go around completely.

So, what did I learn about our friends across the pond?
The Brits call Tony Blair “George Bush’s poodle.”
The cabs are roomier than my college dorm.
Every building is beautiful.
I loved watching their nerdy grammar game shows.
I want go back.

there is a light

When my grandmother was a young woman, she fell deeply in love with a guy named Joey. They married, and just a few days later, Joey left for the war and never returned. My grandma told me that she awoke one night, and her bedroom was dark except for Joey’s picture, which was illuminated on her dresser. She later learned that evening was the same night Joey died.

Years later, she was at a parade with her family and noticed a bright flash of light in the sky. When they returned home, my grandma learned that her brother died. Whenever my Grandma saw a light flashing that wasn’t supposed to be, she got a bad feeling, and I guess it passed on to the rest of the family.

When I was in college, the key ring my Grandma gave me broke in two. I had never taken it off because I felt it was some way connected to her. I was upset that it broke, and when my mom called and told me she thought something was wrong with Grandma, I responded, “I know.”

She was in Chicago visiting family, and she didn’t feel well, so she decided to come back to town early. I saw my grandma that weekend, and my mom even told her about the key ring, which I had fixed. Within a week, my key ring broke again, this time, for good. My mom called later and said that Grandma was in the hospital. She died a few days later.

To this day, when I see a light flickering out, I think of my Grandma. It used to really upset me – like it was a sign that someone I loved was dying. One day, I thought, what if it’s my grandma’s way of contacting me and letting me know that everything is OK? I immediately felt better – the power of the mind.

Last Monday, I took Thor to the vet because he seemed to be getting worse. He had taken nearly all of his antibiotics, and the mass on his neck -- what the vet diagnosed as a severe bacterial infection -- seemed even larger. Dr. Chesnick said the mass had spread to his mouth, and there was nothing they could do to make it better. I didn’t need to wait for the biopsy results; Dr. Chesnick recommended Thor be put to sleep within a day or two so they could leave the catheter in his paw and he wouldn’t have to go through that pain again.

That night was rough. I gave Thor peanut butter on a bagel – a favorite of his. I would have given him anything he wanted because we had only a few hours left together. My dad drove us to the vet the next morning, and we stayed with Thor through the procedure. It was heartbreaking, but I’m glad I was there. Right before he lost consciousness, Thor licked my nose. He knew I needed that.

A few days later, Dr. Chesnick called and said the biopsy results showed that Thor had a highly evasive something carcinoma. It was cancer, and he was really sick. I'm grateful that I was able to spend his last few hours with him.

By the way, the staff at the Kirkman Road Veterinary Clinic has been wonderful. Dr. Chesnick is a sweetheart, and I highly recommend the place to anyone looking for a kind, understanding vet practice.

i'm thinking of what sara said ...

... love is watching someone die.
